Gunnison Colorado Fishing
Blue Mesa Fishing Report
As of last weekend, Blue Mesa is essentially ice free except for a little ice up in the arms. It has been an action-packed spring so far in the Gunnison Valley with loads of great fish making it into the boat. The weather has been mild and the fishing fantastic.
Colorado Trophy Lake Trout
The trophy lake trout bite has been abundant. We have had ample opportunity on trophy fish and have been capitalizing on those opportunities. Spring in Gunnison is a magical time to have a lake trout rod in your hand on Blue Mesa!! These fish are spread out across many depths with the water hovering around 38-40 degrees. Trolling, jigging, and casting have all been producing plentiful fish.
Action Trout
Both the brown trout as well as the rainbows have been eager and willing this spring. You can’t pick a wrong depth on the current trout bite, they are biting at multiple levels. Casting and jigging shorelines has been effective as well as trolling from the surface down to 60ft.
Kokanee
We are finding large pods of Kokanee at varying depths. We have been catching a few each day on the troll. We expect this bite to improve as the water temps start to warm up as spring progresses.
HWY 50 Bridge Closure and Sport Fish Colorado Fishing Trips
The current HWY 50 bridge closure is an evolving situation and you can find updates using this link. Lake Fork and Elk Creek boat ramps are both open daily and we can accommodate Sport Fish Colorado trips with clients coming from either direction (Gunnison or Montrose). We have guides that live on either side of the bridge closure so we can launch at both boat ramps.
