Ice Fishing Conditions 12/12/2023
Our team has been on the ice most days over the last few weeks. We have had some great early season action on many of the lakes we fish!! Always be cautious on early ice, check thickness yourself, make sure to have spikes, spud bar, rope, and a throwable flotation devise. We have been guiding trips and dates are filling up quick around the Holidays. If you are you interested in booking a trip please shoot us a call or e-mail (970)784-6555 or sportfishcolorado@gmail.com
Blue Mesa Res.
Blue Mesa has safe ice east of the Hwy 149 bridge and this ice is 10-12 inches thick. We have had some new ice form the last two days west of the bridge. This has happened two other times over the past few weeks but keeps getting beat back to the bridge with high winds. We just need some calm weather and we should get some more ice working into the Iola Basin soon. The fishing has been great catching good numbers of trout and a few in the 18+ inch range each day. We have had good success with a wide range of colors and patterns, just keep changing up until you find something they are keying in on that day. We are also still doing some open water boat fishing and will continue until the docks ice up (a unique time of year when you can fish ice and open water all in the same day).
Antero Res.
Antero is averaging about 7 inches and fishing has been great! There is a very nasty pressure ridge running across the lake with some pools of water forming. Be smart, I don’t advise crossing this pressure ridge. Use extreme caution in this area. We have been catching great numbers of fish and a few tanks each day. Moving often and cycling through those baits has been the name of the game.
Taylor Res.
Taylor is staring to ice up in the inlets, and near the dam, but is a little ways out from having safe, fishable ice. However, this is the time of year things can progress quite quickly.
Lake San Cristobal
Lake San Cristobal has gone from 10% ice to 95% ice in the last two days. I expect it to cap tonight. Ice ranges from 1-6 inches. There is very little safe fishable ice but should grow quickly now.
Tarryall Res.
Terryall is 100% capped and has 4-5 inches of ice.
