4/4/24 Gunnison Colorado Fishing Report

Blue Mesa

Great Gunnison Colorado Fishing!

We have had the Lake Fork boat ramp open for almost two weeks now. The NPS just put a dock in the water yesterday! Water level is sitting just 32ft down as of Monday, although they are dropping it a bit we have noticed, so probably more like 34ft as of today. This is 129% of average for this time of year. We have a good snow pack and expect a great season with a full lake. Elk Creek boat ramp is beginning to melt out and we anticipate it opening with in the next week or so.

Trout

The trout bite at Blue Mesa Reservoir has been great catching fish both trolling the main body as well as casting and jigging shorelines. We are catching a good mix of browns and rainbows. The trout are healthy, fat and colorful.

Lake trout

The lake trout are currently very spread out around the lake both in area and depth range, with our water temps holding around 36 degrees. However, there are some nice size fish being caught most days.

Kokanee

We have been finding large groups of Kokanee, they are moving fast and hard to pin point. This is a tough bite right now but should get better as the water temps warm up. We are anticipating a more productive year for Kokanee fishing since the water level won’t have such a drastic change with runoff as it did in 2023.

Rivers and streams

The rivers and streams are fishing well. We will have a short window here of some great fishing before runoff hits full swing. Flies as well as small jigs and spinners are producing. Keep in mind many of the river and stream areas are artificial fly and lure only and many have varying limits. We encourage catch and release when fishing outside the large reservoirs. If you are interested in a fly fishing trip, Alpine Outfitters offers trips in the Gunnison Valley and Lake City areas for beginners and experts alike.

Ice Fishing

Taylor Reservoir, Lake San Cristobal, Antero Reservoir, Tarryall Reservoir, 11 mile, and Spinney are all still iced up. There are still some ice fishing opportunities but make sure you check conditions for yourself because they change very rapidly this time of year.
