February 5, 2011 Colorado Ice Fishing Report: Warm winter, but still lots of good ice fishing!
Despite one of the warmest winters I can remember, we still have lots of safe ice on Antero, 11 Mile, and Blue Mesa reservoirs! Fishing has been good for rainbow trout, cutbows, and cutthroat trout on Antero and 11 mile, while Blue Mesa has been yielding good fishing for mackinaw lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, and the occasional salmon. Here are some pictures from recent trips as well as a few from a recent Florida trip! |

January 17, 2012 Colorado Ice Fishing Report: Ice fishing has been good most days!
This has been a weird winter so far with unseasonable warm temperatures, but we still have plenty of safe ice to fish. Blue Mesa is frozen with 6-14 inches of ice from the Lake City Bridge to the mouth of the Narrows just before the Bay of Chickens. Fishing has been excellent for rainbows from 10-18″, good for browns and lake trout, and some days the kokanee are even being aggressive! Antero has 8-14″ of safe ice across the lake and fishing has been a little tougher as of late. Heavy fishing pressure and the full moon threw these fish into a funk where it was tough to get more than a few bites each day. Fishing has improved and there have been a few reports of 7-8lbs fish being caught. Eleven Mile has been great most days so far this year. The full moon changed the pattern up, but good fishing could still be found throughout the day. There have been many of reports of 4-6 lbs fish being caught and a few reports of fish close to 10lbs being caught or tangled with! We fished Taylor about a month ago and had great action in the first ten minutes of the day and the last ten minutes of the day! Slow fishing filled the gaps between these two times, but we ended up with two nice fish and our fishing addiction temporarily filled! The lake trout pictured below came in and slammed my jig in the first ten minutes of the day! I fought him up to the hole and my line snapped! As my line curled up on the water in my hole, I grabbed it and hand fought this fish the rest of the way in. Lucky, yes…but I’ll take it! Now that we have moved away from the full moon, fishing should continue to improve on all of these bodies of water. February is filling up quickly so if you are interested in booking a guided ice fishing trip, please call soon to ensure you get your ideal date! |
